I hear a lot of Christians expressing strong opinions about healthcare, immigration, and foreign aid. I thought it might be helpful to give Christians a refresher about what the Bible says on these subjects.
"When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers." -Leviticus 19:33-34
"Thus says the Lord of hosts, render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart." -Zechariah 7:9-10
"You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the sojourners who reside among you and have had children among you. They shall be to you as native-born children. With you they shall be allotted an inheritance." -Ezekiel 47:22
"Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy." -Proverbs 31:8-9
"Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me." -Matthew 25:34-36
These holy books don't belong to me, but the message belongs to us all. There is a moral imperative for those with abundance of wealth and health to provide for those whose need is great. It happens also to be good domestic and foreign policy. It is in our national security interest to carry out this moral imperative as a nation. It is both smart and right to take our excess and give it to the needy. I don't need the Bible to tell me so, but if you do, it is right there, for anyone who has eyes to see it.
